Danny DeVito was originally considered for the role of Uncle Buck. Candy appeared in more movies written or directed by John Hughes than any other actor. Including Uncle Buck, Candy appeared in National Lampoon’s Vacation; Planes, Trains & Automobiles; The Great Outdoors; She’s Having a Baby; Home Alone; and Career Opportunities. The idea for Home Alone occurred to John Hughes during the making of Uncle Buck, which also starred Macaulay Culkin.

Movie Legends: Was Home Alone Originally Masterminded by Uncle Frank?
Part of the humor of the Home Alone films is the fact that the adults are so abysmally stupid. While this is certainly true of the two thieves, it’s also rather true of pretty much every other adult in the film . What if, instead of them being stupid, it’s actually true that Kevin is a genius and the entire film is distorted through his perception. This is an especially convincing theory, as it makes us rethink the entire way that we think about this film and what it shows us. The film explicitly mentions that Peter and Frank are brothers, but it doesn’t really dive too deeply into their relationship.
"It was far too small to get the crew in the door," explains director Chris Columbus. So they used the exterior of the home, but had to find another solution for interiors shots. In the end, the production team ended up building an entire two-story set inside the gym at New Trier, the closest thing they had to a sound stage there. There is another theory about Kevin's crappy family, however, submitted online by Reddit user Cubanesis.

Always game to play the precocious one, there’s a scene in which Culkin’s character interrogates a potential babysitter through a mail slot. According to Home Alone screenwriter John Hughes’ son James, the idea for the film was born out of his father’s anxiety while preparing for their family’s first trip to Europe. The Home Alone house is located in Winnetka, Illinois, about 16 miles outside of the Windy City, and most of the film was shot in that area. The home itself was used for its brick exterior, although the movie also used interior shots in the living room and the foyer’s now-famous grand staircase. In December 2015, Culkin reprised his role as an adult Kevin McCallister in the inaugural episode of the Jack Dishel web series, "DRYVRS", where a visibly disturbed Kevin recounts his experience of being left home alone by his family. In response to Culkin's video, Daniel Stern appeared in a short video reprising his role as Marv, released in conjunction with Stern's Reddit AMA, where he pleads for Harry to return to help protect him against Kevin's traps. Naomi Barnwell of Roobla said that "Home Alone has all the ingredients that make for a great kids’ film". Columbus initially hoped to have Bruce Broughton score the film, and early posters listed him as the composer. However, Broughton was busy with The Rescuers Down Under, and he had to cancel at the last minute.

There are some compelling pieces of evidence in this theory, including the fact that we never really learn what it is that Peter does for a living. The most compelling piece of evidence that the poster uses is the fact that Peter seems to have an awful lot of money—and the McCallisters seem to live in an awfully nice house—so it’s definitely possible that there’s more to them than meets the eye.
What’s more, the high school’s pool was used to film the interior shots where the basement was flooded in the Murphy house. After the Wet Bandits robbed Kevin’s neighbor’s house, they left the faucet running as a part of their signature calling card. As we see at the end of the movie, this caused the home’s basement to flood with nearly a foot of water. At the time of filming, the Abendshien family lived in the Winnetka house.
Kevin's mother wanted to get back home to her son so bad, she made a bargain with the devil in the airport. That is at least one interpretation of the scene where she met John Candy's Gus. Drewgarr mentioned on Reddit that Kate said she would "sell her would to the devil himself" to get back home to her son. One thing that the internet is known for is for being utterly filled to the brim with twisted and dark theories about our favourite childhood films. While 51 West 95th Street does exist in real-life, the actual filming location was Brownstone Street on the Universal Studios backlot in Los Angeles.
And the second movie starts with Peter, very suspiciously, leaving Kevin behind, on purpose in the airport. These scenarios in the movies further form as evidence of this extremely probable theory, which is not as far-fetched as it would seem at first-glance. Again, going to the family, this theory proposes that Peter McCalsiter shares no bond or loving relationship with his son, Kevin, rather seeks to, somehow, get rid of him.
They’d met the film’s location manager when they lived in Evanston. At first, the location manager expressed interest in using their Winnetka home for the Hughes film Uncle Buck, but that didn’t work out. Another thing, John Hughes who wrote the script says his inspiration for the film has zero to do with Uncle Frank or casting Gerry Bamman as a criminal mastermind.
Kate and Peter's youngest son, Kevin, is the subject of ridicule by his older siblings and cousins. Kevin inadvertently ruins the family dinner after a brief scuffle with his oldest brother Buzz, in which Kevin's airplane ticket is accidentally thrown away, resulting in Kate sending him up to the attic. Kevin berates his mother for allowing the rest of the family to pick on him and wishes that his family would disappear. During the night, heavy winds create a power outage, disabling the alarm clocks and causing the family to oversleep. In the confusion and rush to get to the airport, Kevin is accidentally left behind.
It’s not the attempt to get his wife to steal crystal glasses from the airline that makes him such a bastard. Nor is it the lack of empathy involved in comparing leaving a child on his own to forgetting his reading glasses. It’s not being a cheapskate, refusing to pay for a pizza with the flimsy excuse he only has traveller’s cheques.
Columbus was later able to get in touch with Steven Spielberg, who helped him contact John Williams to produce the final score. Traditional Christmas songs, such as "O Holy Night" and "Carol of the Bells", are featured prominently in the film, as well as the film's theme song "Somewhere in My Memory". The soundtrack was released by Sony Classical Records on cassette on December 4, 1990, and on CD on May 27, 2015.
